FIGUIERA da FOZ
This is the nearest seaside town, a long silver sand beach stretches for several kilometres along the seashore. There are lifeguard stations along some parts of the beach and various activities during the summer months. There are lots of nice seafood restaurants and the town boasts a Casino where there are various shows. To the north of the beach you will find smaller beaches that can be quieter if you want to hunt for them. Approx. 1hr 15 mins drive on good roads.
COJA
The nearest river beach to the house is just along the road past the fire station (bombeiros) and through the entrance to the Lagar do Alva restaurant, this is a public access along the front of the restaurant. Boats can be hired from the restaurant. Take care if swimming above the weir as there are often boats about here and there is also a large sluice pipe to allow water down that is sometimes opened without warning or you understanding the warning. People do dive off the board at the restaurant but again take care if the water levels are low.
SECARIAS
The river beach here is a popular spot to swim in the summer with 2 bar/cafes on either side of the river. Boats can be hired here for a lazy afternoon on the river. Take the road to Arganil and at the roundabout just before Secarias turn right for Tabua. Take the first right along the lane to the Sombrinha restaurant but continue on the top road to the car park. Alternatively you can cross the bridge and then take the first right past the restaurant on the other side of the river (does very nice skewers of fish and meat) and park at the end near the river bar. Approx. 10 mins drive from Coja.
GOIS
The council puts sand down every year for people to sunbathe on or use the grass park at the side of the river where there is also a toddlers pool. The river beach is beside the ancient bridge in the centre of the town. Go into Arganil and along the Main Street to the fountain at the top and then turn right. Pass the Intermarche supermarket on your right and follow the signs for Gois. It takes approx. 30 mins to drive here.

AVO
There is a pretty river beach in the centre of the ancient village of Avo. During the summer there is a toddlers pool and a café/restaurant on site. The council puts down sand and provide a few sun shades and there is a shady, grassy area on which you can relax.
