Getting to Central Portugal is much easier and cheaper now than in the past.
Flights on Ryanair are available at cheap rates from Stansted, Liverpool and Bristol to Porto airport. Easy Jet flies from Liverpool and Luton to Lisbon. The Portuguese airline TAP and BA also fly into Porto and Lisbon on a daily basis from Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester. If you are thinking of driving to Portugal, there are serveral ferry companies, including P&O Ferries, who operate routes between the UK and northern Spain.
The road system in Portugal is very good and the toll roads are not expensive and are never too busy. It takes approximately 2 hours to drive from Porto airport, 2 ½ hours from Lisbon airport and cars are readily available for hire from most major firms at both airports.
Alternatively there are trains to Coimbra, from where you can hire a car or hail a taxi.
