The region has two major cities; Coimbra is the capital of Beira Litoral and Viseu is the capital of Beira Alta. Both are centres of historic interest, with universities, shopping, good restaurants and public offices. Coimbra is most widely known for its prestigious ancient university. Viseu is the capital of the Dão wine region, with an historic core and 12th Century Cathedral (Sé).
